The Bimodal Enterprise: Where Governance and Agility Happily Coexist

October 21, 2015smartsourceBlog

Over the last year or so, the tech zeitgeist has been all about coexistence – between CIOs and CMOs, and between IT organizations and departments.

bimodal_CIOBecause enterprises continue to deal with analytical silos, reporting chaos and lack of trust in decisions based on data, they increasingly are adopting a bimodal approach to enabling business through IT.

What is bimodal IT?

Here’s Gartner’s definition: “Bimodal IT refers to having two modes of IT, each designed to develop and deliver information- and technology-intensive services in its own way. Mode 1 is traditional, emphasizing scalability, efficiency, safety and accuracy. Mode 2 is nonsequential, emphasizing agility and speed.”

To put it another way, “Type 1 is traditional IT, focused on stability and efficiency, while Type 2 is an experimental, agile organization focused on time-to-market, rapid application evolution, and, in particular, tight alignment with business units.”

Analytics in the bimodal enterprise

Whatever definition works best for you, when it comes to delivering world-class business intelligence (BI) analytics with a bimodal approach, the challenge is clear: accurate insights can only be derived from data that is clean and complete. Strong, rigorous data governance is imperative, which requires leadership and control at the enterprise level.

The landscape of BI is experiencing a fundamental shift. (I’ve already talked about how “Winter is coming for big legacy BI vendors” and their inflexible technology.) Ensuring success with analytics today requires meeting end-user demand for self-service capabilities without sacrificing governance and trust in the data. IT leaders must create a model that bridges the gap between centralized BI teams supporting enterprise requirements and user-led decentralized teams looking for greater autonomy.

Next-generation BI is bimodal

Birst’s unique two-tier BI approach is tailor-made for bimodal IT. With a complete view of the “enterprise data tier” and the “user data tier,” it uniquely breaks down departmental data silos to deliver a single version of the truth. In doing so, Birst gives departmental usersautonomy and speed while providing consistency and trust at the executive level.

Underscoring Birst’s bimodality, it is also the only BI solution that effectively supports both cloud and on-premise environments. Enterprises can use any mix of on-prem and cloud data in their Birst analytic warehouse.

It’s not easy for CIOs to meet expectations at both the enterprise and departmental ends of the spectrum. But with Birst, you don’t have to choose between governance and agility. You get both.
